The Dignity of Our Catholic PriestsHow often do we truly reflect on the dignity of our Catholic priests?
Do we realize that, just as Mary, the Mother of God, conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and brought Jesus into the world, so too - by that same Holy Spirit and at the command of Christ - the priest brings Christ to life upon the altar? There, at every Holy Mass, the Lord is mystically born and offered in sacrifice for the forgiveness of our sins.
Do we understand that the Church could not exist without the Priesthood?
It is Christ Himself - whose Body is the Church - who, being the Eternal High Priest of the order of Melchizedek, instituted the sacred Priesthood at the Last Supper. There, He commanded His Apostles, and through them all priests, to consecrate the bread and wine as His Sacred Body and Blood.
God the Eternal promised us Christ, Emmanuel, “God with us” (Isaiah 7:14). Just as Jesus offered Himself on the Cross for the forgiveness of our sins, so the Holy Mass is the re-enacting of that same Sacrifice in an unbloody manner, renewed every day on the altar.
The priest, therefore, possesses the highest dignity on earth, for he alone has been given the power - through Christ Himself - to forgive sins and to consecrate the bread and wine, transforming them into the true Body and Blood of Our Lord.
Indeed, the Church cannot exist without the Priesthood. Even if only one priest and one member of the faithful remain, the Church is still alive, for Christ is present.
Let us then hold our priests in deep respect and gratitude, for through their hands flow the graces of Christ to our souls.
Every Priest is the anointed of the Lord.
Let us pray for priests everywhere, no matter what they might be doing wrong; they need our support. Let us also pray for vocations to the religious life and the Priesthood. Amen.
