The Mystery of the Holy Name of God: I Am Who I Am - YAHWEH

"I Am Who I Am" is the name God revealed to Moses on Mount Sinai - a name not merely spoken but rich with divine meaning, expressing the eternal, uncreated nature of God Himself.
So sacred and incomprehensible was this Name that the Israelites hesitated to pronounce it. In Hebrew, it is represented by four consonants - YHWH - known as the Tetragrammaton, which can be interpreted as “He Who Causes That Which Exists.” Out of reverence, the Israelites often substituted this Name with Adonai, Elohim, or Lord. Over time, the pronunciation Yahweh came to represent this divine self-identification, translated as “I Am Who I Am.”

A Name That Transcends Language

This mystery urges deep reflection: when God declared, "I Am Who I Am," He revealed Himself as the very source of all existence. Everything exists through Him.
Even in our own speech, we echo this mystery without realizing it. When we say "I am" - as in I am happy, I am tired, or I am grateful, etc, - we affirm our existence. And existence, ultimately, comes from God.
God invites us to recognize that each use the verb to be is a humble acknowledgment of life granted by Him. He is Omnipresent and Immutable, never outside of us, but sustaining our every breath. It is not that He needs us - we need Him, in whom we live, move, and have our being.

The Name of God as a Call to Worship

The Holy Name of God serves as a continual reminder of His presence and a call to praise and adore Him, the Author of all creation.

Jesus and the Divine Name "I Am"

Jesus, the Eternal Word made flesh, true God and true man, embraced and proclaimed this divine Name throughout His ministry. This declaration of divinity stirred opposition - not because of His miracles, but because He claimed the divine identity. The religious leaders, gripped by jealousy and disbelief, were outraged.

Salvation Through the Name of Jesus

As Acts 4:12 declares:
“And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”
And in Philippians 2:10-11:
“…at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

These are some declarations in which Jesus used the Holy Name "I am" to describe himself

"I am the bread of life" (John 6:35): Jesus is the source of spiritual nourishment and eternal life.
"I am the light of the world" (John 8:12): God’s light is in Jesus, who illuminates the path to God and truth.
"I am the door" (John 10:7- 9): Jesus is the only way to enter God's kingdom and find salvation.
"I am the good shepherd" (John 10:11-14): Jesus cares for and protects his followers.
"I am the resurrection and the life" (John 11:25): Jesus has power over death and offers new life.
"I am the way, the truth, and the life" (John 14:6): Jesus is the only path to God and the source of all truth and life.
"I am the vine" (John 15:1, 5): Jesus is the source of spiritual life for those who are united to Him.
