It is undeniable that Our Lady participated intimately in the Redemption of the human race. While Christ alone is our Redeemer, Lord, and Savior, His salvific work was carried out in the company of His Mother from the very beginning.

Mary Co-redemptrix participates in or Redemption

As Scripture tells us in Genesis 2:18: “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper who is just right for him.”
This helper, in the fullness of time, was the Blessed Virgin Mary — the beginning of our salvation. She consented to God’s plan, saying in Luke 1:38: “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.”
Christ redeemed us by offering His Sacred Humanity — His Body and Blood — on the Cross. That humanity came from the pure womb of the Virgin Mary. She allowed the Eternal Word to be clothed in her own flesh and blood, giving Him the substance to become man.
This alone merits the title Co-Redemptrix. But there is more.

Mary Co-redemptrix - Our Lady of Sorrows - Jesus man of Sorrows

Jesus, the Man of Sorrows, suffered His Passion, Agony, and Death for our salvation. And Mary, united to Him in soul and spirit, suffered alongside Him — not in a bloody manner, but in her body and soul, by the grace of God.
Her sufferings began early:
1. As a consecrated virgin, she endured the sorrow of needing to marry, offering her virginity as a living sacrifice to God.

2. After conceiving by the Holy Spirit, she bore the secret of the King in silence. Saint Joseph, unaware of the divine mystery, planned to divorce her — until God intervened through an angel.

3. Simeon prophesied that a sword would pierce her soul, unveiling the future Passion of her Son.

4. She fled to Egypt with Joseph and the Child Jesus, living as refugees for seven years — enduring poverty, discrimination, isolation, and hardship.

5. She grieved the massacre of innocent children ordered by Herod in his attempt to kill Jesus.

6. She mourned the death of Saint Joseph, left alone to raise the Son of God.

7. She endured the separation from Jesus during His forty days in the desert.

8. She witnessed the rejection of Jesus by the Pharisees and priests, who treated Him as an enemy.

9. And most profoundly, she suffered the entire Passion of Christ — spiritually and physically — united to Him by the Holy Spirit.
Her suffering was so intense that she could have died, were it not for the grace of God sustaining her. This mirrors the Holy Mass — the unbloody re-enactment of the Sacrifice of Calvary — which Mary also lived spiritually.

Sufferings after the death of Christ - A true Co-redemptrix

After Christ expired on the Cross, Mary continued to suffer:
She witnessed the piercing of His Sacred Heart, His burial, the silence of the tomb, and her loneliness. She became a widow, entrusted to the care of Saint John the Apostle.
We can be certain: Mary, Our Lady of Sorrows, suffered deeply and continuously. United to the Man of Sorrows, she participated in the mystery of our Redemption. Jesus and Mary — Redeemer and Co-Redemptrix.
Many saints have honored her with this title. Pope Saint John Paul II referenced it multiple times in his writings. Yet, the Church hesitates to define it formally, citing ecumenical concerns and the risk of misunderstanding.
Still, the faithful recognize her role. The learned may debate, and forbid this title, but the heart of the Church knows.
