Pope Francis I
Cardinal
Jorge Mario Bergoglio
"Habemus Papam from
Argentina"
After the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI Cardenal Joseph
Ratzinger there was a conclave at the Vatican where Cardinal Jorge Mario
Bergoglio, aged 76 was elected the 266th in the Catholic Church. His task is to
be the official shepherd after Peter the apostle, who will lead a folk of over a billion
one hundred thousand Catholics throughout the world.
Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was Born in Buenos Aires
Argentina on
December 17, 1936, of Italian descent, he is the first
pope form the western hemisphere, the first Latin American pope. As a Pope he
chose the name Francis after Saint Francis of Assisi, a saint who was known for
his mission to rebuild the Church in his time and who cared for the poor. He
bore the stigmata or wounds of Christ and lived a humble life dedicated to serve
the poor.
Pope Francis was ordained a priest in the order of the
Jesuits, whose main founder was Saint Ignatius of Loyola, one of the cofounders
was Saint Francis Xavier who was known as a missionary saint.
At the age of 21 one of his lungs was removed due to
illness, but he regained his health and is in top health condition to lead the
Church. He has been a very conservative priest, bishop and cardinal. He has
lived a life of humility, austerity and respect for the poor and the needy. He
has shown his commitment to traditional Catholic Theology and has publicly
struggled for the poor and for human rights. Living in Argentina a country where
there is a large poor population, he has complained to the government about the
misery of human life and inequality considering poverty a violation of human
rights.
He has shown publicly his humility by refusing to travel
in luxurious cars like many other religious, he has seen using public transport
not only in Argentina but also in Rome. He is also a profound devotee of the
Blessed Virgin Mary.
He comes as a ray of hope for the Catholic Church during
these times when there are scandals in the Church about homosexuality and
pederasty, when many Catholics are moving to easy doctrines found in other
Christian Churches.
The Church is waiting for a strong leader capable of
defending Jesus' teachings including the preservation of life, no to abortions,
no to euthanasia, no to contraception, no to homosexuality, no to gay marriages,
no to vice, no to sin and yes to Jesus Christ our Lord.
Some of Pope Francis writings include:
- Meditations for the Religious
- Reflections of Hope
- To Educate: Exactingness and Passion
- Putting the Motherland on One's Shoulders
- The Nation to Be Built
- Corruption and Sin
- True Power Is Service
- The social debts of our times
- On Heaven and Earth
Judging by the titles of his works we can see that his
philosophy is based on love for the Catholic faith, love for the poor and his
goal is sainthood for everyone.
According to the prophecies of
Saint Malachi about the popes of the
Church, Pope Francis corresponds to the last pope whom He calls Petrus
Romanus or Peter the Roman. He will be in charge of keeping
the orthodoxy of the Catholic Church.
In the persecution of the Holy Roman Church, there will reign Peter the
Roman, who will feed his flock among many tribulations after which the seven
hilled city will be destroyed and the dreadful Judge will judge the people.
.
Let us hope that our new shepherd will take care
of us and protect our faith during theses times of apostasy and
corruption.
